I am a researcher and teacher in rhetoric and composition. My primary research interests are two-fold:

• Hermeneutics in computational textual analysis. My educational background is in rhetoric, and I am interested in bringing the interpretive expertise of the humanities to the computational expertise of computer science to make better sense of complicated language models. I am fascinated by what NLP and AI researchers have done with language processing, and asking how we might use predictive and classificatory language models to better understand the rhetorical and linguistic aspects of language.
• Fostering critical thinking about AI and data in the writing classroom. I have taught writing and communication for many years, and have developed a particular interest in teaching students to critically reflect on the discursive roles that data and AI tools play in our world. Critically engaging in a public today requires being able to critically read data sets and generated texts (Each day, I am more convinced this skill is critical for a functioning democracy!). Teaching these skills in the writing classroom is a relatively new endeavour, and I am excited to continue figuring out how to draw on the traditions of rhetoric and composition to do this well.

Outside of work, some of my favorite things include painting, fancy food, genealogy, Russian literature, drinking tea, and hanging out with my partner, baby boy, dog, and 2 black cats.
